For most people under 19, emotion > achievement. I've thought about what the "appeal" of Justin Beiber is, and it has lead me to thinking that the concepts of self-worth, value, etc. have just changed a lot in the last 10 years.
At least with this latest crop of 14-19 year olds, it seems like they value someone who is free to do what they want, doesn't grow up, looks like a heavily retouched photo, and does things compelled by overwhelming emotion than reason or success.
To them, this is beautiful and sincere:

This is dangerous, ugly, and cliche:
This is a life wasted, unhappy and taken advantage of by other people:
This is a life well spent, loved by many and making something that some people love and "changes lives" and makes them feel happy and good, regardless of what else it gets them:
